Talking Dictionary – Speech Enabled Dictionary for the Visually Impaired
Review by on
Talking Dictionary is a speech enabled dictionary developed by RWF Talking Software for blind, disabled and visually impaired computer users. It is basically a combination of the free Wordnet thesaurus and the free Microsoft speech engine.

Talking Dictionary will speak out source words, definitions, synonyms, spell check alternatives, and so on. It will speak out any of the 250,000 source words it comes with. Furthermore Talking Dictionary will spell hard to understand words.

You can browse the Talking Dictionary like an electronic book and you can make annotations. There is no limit to the number of annotations you can make.

The Talking Dictionary application is meant to be used by the visually impaired. It is for this reason that it comes with full audio instructions on how to use the application – but only if you get the Talking Dictionary CD. It is also the reason why the app can be controlled via keyboard shortcuts.

Should you decide to get Talking Dictionary, there are some technical details you should know about. First of all you should know that the download weighs in at some 9MB; on a high-speed internet connection the download will complete in no time at all. To start using the application, you must install it first; Talking Dictionary works fine with all versions of the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system, including the latest iteration, Windows 7.

You can use Talking Dictionary free of charge, but only during a trial period of 14 days. This should be more than enough time for you to figure out if you want to pay for a license or not. The license is not expensive, but keep in mind that Talking Dictionary is made up of the free Wordnet thesaurus and the free Microsoft speech engine.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Some 250,000 source words
  • Works with Windows 7

Cons
  • Free to use only during the 14-day trial period
  • Trial version has a five-letter limit on entries
